I am a confessed football fanatic. Feeding the obsession requires a DVR and dexterity with the remote control. On most Sundays, 3 NFL games are scheduled from 1 PM to 11:00 PM.
10 hours of football?
No!
3 hours of football and 8 hours of commercials.
I fully understand that commercials make the telecast possible. I guess I could sit there staring at the commercials and do my part to keep free TV going. I’ve been getting away with commercial free football games ever since the DVR was available and I will keep on doing so as long as possible.
But, for all of us DVR users, there’s trouble on the horizon. It’s called “streaming”. Streaming shows cannot be recorded/no fast forward/no rewind/no recording with the aim of watching it at your convenience. Thankfully you can still mute the commercials and play video games for 2 or 3 minutes.
After watching the Thursday night NFL games streamed by Amazon, I appreciate my DVR even more. The usual commercial break consists of 4 30- second commercials. Boring! Thank heaven for the IPAD and Candy Crush to entertain me through it all.
There are some big $$$ players in the streaming business, so it’s only going to get bigger. But, as long as the more sophisticated agile free TV viewer like me can shrink a 3.5 hr. telecast down to 75 minutes — no problem!
