“Saving” Money

Let me take you back now to 1991. While waiting for some financial people to apply for a mortgage, I chose to kill time by browsing in a book store. I happened to pick up a book about advertising. The first line in the book was — “All advertising is bulls–t” I’m not a big fan of the words “all” and “none” but, this might be the exception to the rule.

Maybe the world’s most respected financial institutions can help.

The following comes from an Argentinian bank; What is the origin of the word “saving”? This term comes from the Arabic word “hurr” and means “of free condition”. It refers to a slave or prisoner who made savings to recover his freedom. From the very beginning, saving has been associated with the idea of freedom to build a better future.

Now we’re getting somewhere. Extreme debt is a form of slavery. It can ruin your life. The most critical step toward lowering your debt is the first step. Get started. Start small. Give it a small “trial” time — Maybe 6 months. Even after only 3 months you’ll feel stronger about controlling your financial future.

Now back to the use of the word “saving” in advertising. It should be very clear now that spending less than the original advertised price is not saving.

I’m not the least bit optimistic that what I’m saying here will move anyone to be more financially responsible. Total credit card debt is the U.S. is at it’s historical high which tells me that a large segment of the population is oblivious to the concept of financial restraint. But, there’s always hope.

Here’s a good place to start —

“Smartasset”? Now that’s my kind of humor.

  1. Interestingly enough, Bob, I got a text from my sister-in-law yesterday, declaring her joy in learning that her 26 year old daughter had finally paid all her bills and was debt-free! Now mind you, her daughter has NO college debt, is not married, and is living at home with her parents! At 26 I was married, was post college and grad school, had a full time job and no credit card (except for a Montgomery Ward card to begin establishing credit). I also remember a moment years later when I was taking a former student to his first year of college, there were credit card company tents and representatives swarming the campus….Therein lies the trouble.

  2. A number of times, I’ve come across the speculation that the human brain matures at the age of 25. Coincidently, yesterday, my grand daughter told me how she aced all of her college courses’ final exams and finished with a 4.0 overall. She just turned 25. She will be an M.D. some day.
