The following is Santa’s attempt to explain to our 4-year-old great granddaughter why he left a gift for her at Nana and Papa’s house to be opened the day after Christmas. That’s when our family will be celebrating Christmas due to some family members arriving the day after. I didn’t want everyone opening gifts while there were none for her. Santa doesn’t speak directly to the children very often, and, as you will see, tends to offer too much detail:
Dear Evie:
This is Santa.
I’m writing to let you know that in addition to the gifts which I will leave for you at your home, I am going to drop off one special gift at Nana and Papa’s house.
Nana and Papa’s fireplace is not a real one. The chimney’s way too small and I don’t want to get stuck. So, I will leave your gift on the front doorstep after I’m done delivering toys for children around the world which will actually be late on Christmas day due to all the many time zones around the globe.
Remember to be a good girl every day. Sit down at the dinner table just like the grown-ups do and put your toys away when you’re done playing. You are very lucky to have such a good Mommy and Daddy so be sure to listen to them and do what they ask you to do.
Well, I gotta go or I’ll never be ready on Christmas Eve.
luvya, Santa.
